Emergencies
Braces First Aid
It is quite normal to experience some discomfort over the first few days after the placement of your braces. Mild pain relief medication will usually assist with this. If you are unsure of what to take, consult a pharmacist or your family doctor. Eating only soft foods for the first few days will also help. Braces are made to be quite smooth and rounded. Even so, the mouth is a sensitive area and it may feel a little irritated in some places until it adjusts to the new addition. We will have provided you with some silicone wax to place over any of these places. The key is to thoroughly dry the spot you wish to apply it, to allow for the best adhesion. This wax can later be peeled off or removed by thorough tooth brushing. The wax should only be required for the first couple of weeks while your mouth adjusts to the braces, it can then be kept for an emergency situation - e.g. a broken wire or similar problem.
Loose Wires, Band or Appliance
Don't be alarmed if something comes loose. This happens occasionally. If a bracket, wire, or band comes loose, it is not an emergency. Please call us and let us know, so that we can add a bit of time to your next scheduled appointment. Depending on the circumstances, we may want to repair the broken item before your next scheduled appointment. In this event, we will schedule a separate appointment. Please call our office so that we can evaluate your situation and decide which is best for your situation. If any piece comes off, save it and bring it with you to the office.
Trauma
In case of any accident involving the face, check your mouth and the appliances immediately. If your teeth are loosened or any of the appliances are damaged, contact us or your dentist immediately.
