Laura was raised in Perth and completed her Bachelor of Dental Science with Honours at the University of Western Australia. She then worked as a dentist in rural Western Australia and in Melbourne, across both the private and public sectors, providing dental education and treatment to school children. That experience first sparked her interest in orthodontics.
She earned her Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Orthodontics) from the University of Sydney. Her research thesis examined therapeutic effects on tooth development and root resorption, and was awarded the Dentsply Prize at the university's research day.
After graduating, Laura practised in Hobart before relocating back to Perth with her family.
