Face mask therapy

A framework worn at home for at least 14 hours a day to encourage the upper jaw forward and reduce an underbite.

Face mask

Orthodontic face mask therapy (FMT) is used to reduce “underbites” in growing patients. This is when your lower teeth are positioned further forward relative to your upper teeth when chewing or resting.

How does it work?

FMT works by applying gentle, consistent force to the upper jaw to encourage its forward growth.

What to expect

We first start by making a custom-fit expander which is glued to your upper teeth. A framework (or face mask) is fitted to the shape of your face. This is required to be worn a minimum of 14 hours daily. Most children tend to wear their face mask after dinner and sleeping. Extra wear is encouraged on the weekends or during quiet time. Elastics are used to connect the framework to the expander which is easily managed by our young patients.

How to get the best result

Compliance is crucial and regular follow-ups with your orthodontist are required to check the appliances and monitor progress. Your face mask is removed for eating and drinking. Keeping the chin and forehead pads clean and dry can minimise skin irritation from contact. You can line the chin cup with soft cotton for comfort.

Some initial discomfort is very normal and it may take some practice to place the elastics and face mask easily. Thorough instructions are given to you at the time when your face mask is fitted.

Treatment time is determined by patient compliance and severity of the bite.

Remember: if you have any queries or questions regarding FMT, please discuss with your orthodontic team.
