Twin block
A removable functional appliance worn day and night to bring the lower jaw and teeth forward in a growing patient.
How it works
The twin block is a functional appliance designed to help reduce the discrepancy between the upper and lower jaws and teeth. It works by encouraging the lower jaw and teeth further forward. The twin block is normally worn for 9–12 months. The appliance cannot provide detailed movements of individual teeth, and so braces are often required to finalise the alignment and bite after this period.
Wear
It is important that you wear your twin block all of the time (both day and night) as it is only working while it is in place. There are a few activities that you will need to take it out for: eating, brushing, cleaning, contact sports and swimming.
Cleaning
When you brush your teeth you will also need to brush your twin block out of the mouth with your toothbrush and toothpaste. Do this over the sink so that if it falls, it will not fall too far as it can break. On a weekly basis it is advised that you soak the twin block in a cleaning solution such as Polident or similar.
What to expect
When you start wearing your twin block it will feel a little strange as you are not used to having an appliance in your mouth but persistence is important. There are a few things that you will notice over the initial adjustment period.
- Speaking will be awkward, and will initially sound different. However if you practise talking and reading aloud you will adjust faster.
- Your mouth will feel more watery as your body will produce more saliva. However this will settle down over a couple of days.
- Swallowing will feel strange initially but you will soon adjust.
- At the beginning you may feel some discomfort as your muscles get used to functioning in their new position. Simple analgesics can be used, similar in strength to those you would take for a headache. This discomfort should only last for a few days, however, if it persists please make contact with the surgery.
Remember: more hours of wear equals better and faster results.
