Partial braces
Braces on a few teeth only, used when full braces are not needed or while baby and adult teeth are mixed.
Partial braces
Partial braces are advised when full braces are not required or if you have a mix of baby and adult teeth.
They are used for a variety of reasons including correcting crossbites and straightening front teeth.
What to expect
Partial braces usually need just one appointment to fit. The teeth are polished with a gritty paste then cleaned and dried. Once dry, the orthodontist places the braces in position and then sets the glue with a bright light. A thin, flexible wire is connected to the braces with your choice of colours. Clear braces are also available in some instances.
Braces will feel tight initially and some discomfort of the teeth is to be expected. This is usually managed well with paracetamol and a soft diet. Discomfort peaks at days 2–3 then is most often resolved within 1 week. Some rubbing of the lips and cheeks is normal until the mouth adapts to the shape of the braces.
How do I care for braces?
Thorough instructions and a care pack will be given to you at your braces appointment. Avoiding hard/sticky foods and eating carefully is very important to minimise breakages. A high level of oral hygiene is required to prevent damage to your teeth and gums throughout treatment.
Your orthodontist normally makes adjustment appointments every 4–8 weeks.
Depending on your treatment plan, you may or may not require a removable retainer at the end of your braces.
Remember: please discuss any questions or concerns with your orthodontic team.
